I will be leaving Stevens in two weeks to return to teaching Preschool. I have enjoyed my wonderful customers and all the people I work with- and will definitely be sad to leave them. Reuse and Recycle Foam Carpet Pad

Color Of The Year...

The color of the year is turquoise...a beautiful combination of serene blue and the invigorating properties of green. These images above are from La Dolce Vita blog ,Phyllis Boger silk fabric,Palmer Weiss from Things That Inspire blog and of course Van Gogh. It just goes to show that a little or a lot of turquoise can liven up a room and looks great with orange, pinks and gold.

Beautiful new pattern-Hermes Orange?

This is a new pattern carpet from Karastan. It can be put down as a broadloom or it could be bound into an area rug.It also has a matching runner. It comes in three color combinations-needless to say the picture with the orange pop looks great ! It also comes in a blue/brown and a camel/coffee combination.

I don't like usually like flowers for a carpet-but these flowers form an interesting pattern...not your grandmothers floral! Maybe just a touch of retro. The carpet could have a cottage look-but I like the way they brought out the orange and with the furnishings gave it a more sophisticated look.

Stop in (or go to your local dealer) to take a look at this new broadloom addition. I think we are going to start seeing more prints...we get a lot of people that are tired of just a plain cut pile and want their floor to have a tweed look ( or a print). I think that is why berber continues to popular, it is not just one solid color. In the northeast the frizees never took off...we are still pulling them out of homes-anyone remember orange/red shags?

All Beiges Are Not The Same

I have a room in my house that my husband picked out the color and painted. He went to the paint store and choose his beige...all by himself. Once painted, I couldn't help but "gag" at the pink undertone of the beige. I didn't tell him how "pink" the beige was...he would not have seen it anyway...and have lived with that room for around 5 years. It is an upstairs room the girls used as a den-so I didn't have to look at it too often. Recently, since my girls are off to college ( and one is out of school and living in Vermont) I changed the room around and put a twin bed in the room. I put a pink comforter on the bed and the wall color looked "good"! Maria Kilam of the blog Colour Me Happy has lots to say about beige with pink undertones-and definitely worth reading.

The point is whether it is carpet or paint-this undertone will be important when you get your carpet down and find out it looks awful with your beige and floral sofa.

If you have trouble seeing the undertones yourself-ask the salesperson for help...bring the sample home and put it in your own lighting...you are going to have that carpet for a long time!

How to Choose the Perfect Area Rug

When choosing area rug there are a few things to keep in mind.

1. Under a coffee table a 4' x 6' or 6' x 9' usually works fine. Use round if your table is round or rectangle if your table is a rectangle.

2. It is acceptable to have the front legs of your sofa on

the area rug and the back legs not. Try to leave between 8" and 18" of evenly spaced floor around the perimeter of the room.

3. In the dining room your area rug needs to be large enough so when you pull out the chairs they remain on the rug. The amount of additional width varies in opinion-anywhere from 24" to 4'. If you measure your own table and chairs you can determine what is right for you. Other furniture such as the hutch or buffet should not be on the carpet-just the dining table and chairs.

4. An area rug should be large enough in a bedroom to fit under the bed and have enough to extend beyond the sides. It should extend at least 18" for a queen/king size bed and at least 12" for a full or twin size bed.

5. A pad is a good idea to place under an area rug for the following reason:

a. Improves the ability to vacuum the rug effectively by allowing more air to be sucked up- which helps remove more dirt.
b. Absorbs the impact when walking
c. Cuts the noise level because it absorbs sound
d. Reduces wear on the rug
e. Protects the floor underneath the area rug

Why do I need a subfloor under my new vinyl?

Your new floor looks only as good as the floor it lays on. What I mean by this is if a new vinyl is installed over an existing floor, your new floor will emboss whatever is underneath- the pattern, a rip in the old vinyl etc. Not only that, but should the old floor start to loosen the new floor will as well.

When an installer puts in a subfloor he patches the seams-like you would mud and tape your drywall. This produces a strong flat surface which will be the foundation for your new floor.By doing this, the new floor that is installed will look great for years.

There are new vinyls out that do not require subfloors. These are fiberglass composites, thicker then the usual felt backed vinyl, and able to go over existing floors. Many manufacturers produce them. At Stevens we carry Congoleum, Mannington and Armstrong.

1. Carpet

We see a lot of interest in patterned and sculpted carpet. Carpets have patterns that are anything from floral and vines to geometrics. The carpet in the picture above is from Mohawk-Shaw, Gulistan, Hollytex and Masland also offer wonderful patterns.

2. Luxury Tiles

Congoleum has a great product called Duraceramic. This is a vinyl tile that is over a limestone composite. It is glued down to a sub-floor and can be grouted or not. It is warmer then ceramic, can be repaired easily if one gets damaged and has the look of stone,slate or ceramic.

3. Laminate

There are some beautiful tile and wood look laminates on the market. Grand Illusions, from Armstrong-is a new high gloss (called a piano finish) wood laminate that comes in exotic wood choices. It has a thick core, so it sounds more like real wood and is a great addition to almost any room.

Flooring Choices
